LINER NOTES

Hi, this is Les Izmore. I had the pleasure of working with Kaz Kazanoff back in the 1980s with Blacktop Records in New Orleans. We recorded together with several great artists for that label including Earl King, Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets, Robert Ward, Ronnie Earl, and many others. It is wonderful to see Kaz continuing his career with The Texas Horns. He was blowing his butt off on the tenor sax back then, and now with John Mills on baritone sax, and Al Gomez on trumpet, this is the most powerful, hard-blowing horn section around! Together they have created a dynamite new CD (and vinyl) for Severn Records with all original material. Still deeply within the Blues traditions, The Texas Horns have moved ahead with a contemporary and personal sound. With Get Here Quick, it is clear that The Texas Horns have really come into their own!

And what an amazing lineup of guests: Curtis Salgado turns in a very soulful vocal on Mills’ R&B groover “Sundown Talkin’”, with Johnny Moeller on guitar. John Nemeth sings a beautiful soul ballad with a topical lyric slant, “Love is Gone”, by Kaz. Gary Nicholson sings two of his great originals, “Soulshine”, which features Anson Funderburgh on lead guitar, and “Fix Your Face”, featuring Ronnie Earl on guitar. Austin’s own Carolyn Wonderland rocks out on vocals and lead guitar on Kaz’ original “I’m Doing Alright, At Least For Tonight”, and Guy Forsyth sings Mills’ opening track, “Guitar Town”. A stellar Texas rhythm section completes the picture, featuring Red Young and Nick Connolly on keys; Johnny Moeller, Denny Freeman, Jon Del Toro Richardson, and Derek O’Brien on guitars; Chris Maresh and Russell Jackson on bass; and Tommy Taylor and John Bryant on drums.

But make no mistake, The Texas Horns are front and center throughout this great CD: rockin’ horn solos and magnificent horn section work stand out on every track. Half the CD is Texas Horns instrumentals, including Gomez’ terrific New Orleans send-off “2018”, Mills’ closer “Truckload of Trouble” and Kaz’ title track, “Better Get Here Quick”.

Get Here Quick and Dig It!!
